Mark Rodrieg is a video artist, composer, and flutist living and working in Paris, France and Houston, Texas. His work exists at the intersection of the visual, auditory, and performative, exploring the liminal space between them. As a multidisciplinary artist, he navigates the specificities of video art, composition, and classical music performance to create experiences that move beyond conventional notions of medium and genre.
Mark Rodrieg is a multi-dimensional artist (flutist, composer, video artist) whose performances have been presented in concert venues, museums, curated art-spaces and radio stations in North America, Europe and Asia. Rodrieg is also a former Naval Officer, seasoned international corporate lawyer and avid sportsman, having competed in international competitions for several years as part of the USA Fencing Team. In spite of this background, he chose to follow his artistic goal in life, making room for music and video art.
At an inception level, Mark Rodrieg pushes the boundaries of how we engage with and perceive operatic-type works. While opera was conceived as a combined art form, the libretto (sung text and staging) is overwhelming narrative and most often dominates the combined work even though the musical elements are usually the vastly stronger component. In his video works, as Rodrieg is also a classical music performing artist, he makes a concerted attempt to rebalance the foregoing limitations by having the visual elements flow directly from both the theoretical and imaginative elements of the score (either his own compositions or those by other composers he performs) while also avoiding the trap of excessive narration.
